My name is Vishnu Karanam (VK), and my fascination with ancient knowledge began unexpectedly with a story—a tale of discovery that stretches back to the 18th century. Thomas Babington Macaulay is often acknowledged for transforming the educational landscape during British rule in India. Macaulay, a British historian and politician, played a significant role in shaping education policy in 19th-century India. His policies left a lasting impact on the Indian education system, creating a class of English-educated Indians who contributed significantly to administration and intellectual life.
However, as British policies favored Western education, the Gurukul system—rooted in the teachings of ancient Indian scriptures—began to lose prominence and support. Reflecting on what has been lost, I set out on a journey to recover the ancient knowledge and traditions that were central to our civilization’s Golden Age.
I don’t have a guru, nor am I seeking one, but I am guided by mentors and a deep respect for the culture of Sanatan Dharma. I believe that understanding its true value can only come through knowing the ultimate truth. What is this truth, I wonder, that led Bharat to flourish so profoundly in ancient times? For any civilization to reach its peak, its education system must be strong and nurturing—and yet, in our once-flourishing land, that system was broken, its roots pulled up by centuries of invasions and exploitation.
Why was there such relentless looting and dismantling of our knowledge systems? Was it only wealth that was taken, or was it something deeper? As I attempt to tap into the essence of this lost knowledge, I feel that if it is destined to awaken, it will do so in ways we cannot yet imagine.
This journey is a humble attempt by an ordinary individual seeking raw knowledge and striving to sow seeds of curiosity for others to nurture. I wish I had all the resources to fully revive what was lost, but for now, my mission is to explore and share the wisdom of the Gurukul system as best I can. Perhaps my efforts will resonate, or perhaps they won’t—but ultimately, I am here to honor our heritage by giving this revival my sincere attempt.
As a wise saint once said, “Ganesha is yet to come and teach the Vedas.” Who knows, perhaps Ganesha is destined to bring this ancient wisdom back to Bharat once more, to guide us toward a renaissance of knowledge and spirit. And in Bharat, as is our tradition, every great endeavor begins with a prayer to the land itself. With this reverence and hope, I embark on this journey—one small step in rekindling the light of our shared heritage, and one humble attempt to honor the timeless wisdom that awaits rediscovery.
A bold attempt is half success. Success or failure—these I leave to the Divine. What matters is that a sincere attempt has begun. With conviction and reverence, I dedicate myself to the pursuit of ancient wisdom. Vedas it is, from now on.
May this journey honor the legacy of our ancestors and, perhaps, in some small way, bring the timeless teachings of the Vedas back to Bharat.
